On 23 July 2026, the Rector of Ho Chi Minh City University of Natural Resources and Environment signed Decision No. 1053/QD-TDHTPHCM recognising the SIGMA Research Group (Smart Infrastructure & GIS Management with AI Lab) as an official research group of the university for a three-year term.
The decision was issued under the Law on Science, Technology and Innovation No. 93/2025/QH15, the Law on Higher Education No. 125/2025/QH15, Politburo Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW dated 22 December 2024 on breakthrough development of science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation, Decision No. 329/QD-TDHTPHCM dated 10 March 2026 on the organisation and operation of research groups, and the proposal of the Faculty of Geodesy, Cartography and Civil Engineering.
The group is led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dang Xuan Truong, Head of the Department of Urban Infrastructure Management, with Mr. Tran Vu Van Hoa as core member. The group has 12 members and will operate from September 2026 to August 2029 across four research directions that use machine and deep learning as the core method.
